In Galatians 4:1-31 the relation is taken up, not of the law to the promise, but of the Christian now to the condition of the saints of old a very important point also. Note, The best antidote against the poison of sin is to walk in the Spirit, to be much in conversing with spiritual things, to mind the things of the soul, which is the spiritual part of man, more than those of the body, which is his carnal part, to commit ourselves to the guidance of the word, wherein the Holy Spirit makes known the will of God concerning us, and in the way of our duty to act in a dependence on his aids and influences. You know, you come up with some heretical teaching, you get everybody excited and everybody's listening, everybody's beginning to discuss what you're teaching. Here I've got this new twist on the scripture. You do not need it, because the Holy Ghost thus working strengthens you unto love. Others are sins against our neighbour, and contrary to the royal law of brotherly love, such as hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, which too often occasion seditions, heresies, envyings, and sometimes break out into murders, not only of the names and reputation, but even of the very lives, of our fellow-creatures. Whoever despises the facts of Christianity, as if nothing in Scripture were worthy of meditation, or of ministering to others but exercises and speculative deductions, will be found, if he do not find himself often, on the verge of dangerous delusions, both for the mind and for the walk. Then, bringing in the name of Jerusalem, the Spirit leads him to apply the prophecy of Isaiah, which shows that millennial Israel (in their turn abandoning self-righteousness, and made free by God's grace in Christ) will look back and count as their own those now brought in as Christians, and find far more children begotten by the gospel, in the time of their own desolation, than even when they flourished of old, and had ,all that earthly power and glory could give. Some would have received the inheritance because of promise, and others on the ground of law. It is not merely to seek in love a fallen brother, but to be the succourer of others in their difficulties. Paul had a characteristically practical mind. This would have flowed from Peter's conduct. He begins with the works of the flesh, which, as they are many, so they are manifest. The inheritance, therefore, depends on the grace of God fulfilling His promise, not on man's accomplishment of the law, even if possible. It can be used for the pus of an unclean wound, for a tree that has never been pruned, for material which has never been sifted. Besides, we have a more daily duty: "Bear ye one another's burdens." See Maji Obss. WebGalatians 5:15. ( Matthew 27:46 ) Who was He crying to? And they want to get on our case because we don't run down every night and baptize people the moment they're saved. The allusion is to beasts of prey falling upon and devouring one another: for wolves or dogs to worry sheep is not strange; but for sheep to distress one another is unnatural. But if not called to have his place among the twelve, it was the Lord's sovereign dealing to give him a better one. ] A climactic figurative designation of the hateful working of party enmity, in which they endeavoured mutually to hurt and destroy one another. Of these and such like, says he, I tell you before, as I have also told you in times past, that those who do such things, how much soever they may flatter themselves with vain hopes, shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Nothing that God afterwards introduced annulled this. And this I say, that the covenant confirmed before by God unto Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, can not annul so that it should make the promise of none effect." Again, it is not a liberty to do anything I please. So he calls on them to be as free of the law as himself. Galatians 1:1-24. "To Abraham were the promises made, and to his seed.". What he preached was the truth as to this matter. ] A climactic figurative designation of the hateful working of party enmity, in which they endeavoured mutually to hurt and destroy one another. You say that the promise is everything, and that the law cannot either set aside the promise or add other clauses to it. "Ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted." He visits Arabia and Damascus once more. It is to be noted that the summit of all meanings was the allegorical meaning. All that the law can do, even when yielded by the might of the Spirit of God, is to force on a soul the consciousness of being dead before God. "Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. Now, it is evident and to this I call your particular attention that the apostle here binds together his gospel with his apostolic place. . WebThe meaning of this proverbial warning (see on 1 Corinthians 5:6) is: If the false apostles have, by means of their persuasion, succeeded in making even but a small beginning in the work of imparting to you erroneous doctrines or false principles, this will develope itself to the corruption of your whole Christian faith and life. consumed, &c.Strength of soul, health of body, character, and resources, are all consumed by broils [Bengel]. If you want to be a subject in God's kingdom, then you cannot do these things. Paul now warns them about a consequence of this. Because you'll never come to their beliefs by just reading the Bible. Paul was confident the Galatians would resist the one leading them in the wrong direction. And so Paul is standing against this teaching in his letter to the Galatians, and in chapter five, he said. It needs to be boistered by Gods spirit. Theirs was the slave's son Ishmael. Now, Paul taught righteousness through faith. Liberty from the law and from the bondage of the law, because that cannot make you righteous. The apostle urges that all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But it was in no vain glory, in no tone of superiority, though, no doubt, it was a far fuller and higher testimony than theirs; for he adds, "privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run or had run in vain." Paul adds a grim bit of advice. Hence it is that Rome, which most decidedly in principle rests on human succession (as all worldly religion must, to a certain extent, embrace the same principle) Rome, I say, seeks to derive her authority, as all know, from Peter. If God had been a man, he would have wiped out this world long ago; but he has that patience which bears with all our sinning and will not cast us off. Therefore, you died to that belief and you trusted Jesus' death on the cross for your salvation. Another reason inducing to love is taken from the pernicious consequences of a contrary spirit and conduct. Don't be entangled again with rules, regulations, a yoke of bondage. But in this he could glory. it had a resurrection-source, instead of being from Christ on earth, and in relation to the work God was doing when He sent His Son here below. It is not an old creation, but a new one. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is now much confusion of things that differ; and so, more or less, error runs through the whole of it in all its parts; but I know not anything more ruinous than this. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love ( Galatians 5:6 ). WebGalatians 5:15 Context Crossref Greek Verse (Click for Chapter) New International Version If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. And no wonder. For Christ bought off those that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons, bringing them by grace into a place of known salvation and intelligent joy in relation with our God and Father, out of that bondage and nonage which the law supposes. As the child of the slave girl persecuted the child of the free woman, the children of law now persecute the children of grace and promise. It is a grim illustration at which a polite society raises its eyebrows, but it would be intensely real to the Galatians who knew all about the priests of Cybele. For they were saying that was it was necessary to be circumcised and to keep the law of Moses in order to be righteous before God, to be saved. "Have you been reading this book?" And, as this would be the best means of preserving them from fulfilling the lusts of the flesh, so it would be a good evidence that they were Christians indeed; for, says the apostle (Galatians 5:18; Galatians 5:18), If you be led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. First, we must guard it, especially from those who would pressure us to follow the law. The apostle was given to preach the truth more fully than any other. "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." Dissension describes a society in which the very opposite is the case, where the members fly apart instead of coming together. For God would not fellowship with man dominated by his flesh. But it degenerated; came to mean the desire to have what someone else has, wrong desire for what is not for us. You see, you don't need any laws. Thank You, Jesus, for Your forgiveness and for Your love and for Your grace to me.". For God considers the poor; He has regard to the simple; He has children in His eye. And what sort of life can this be? Partisan strife will be fatal to the Christian community as a whole. WebGalatians 5:115 focuses on what those in Christ should do with our freedom in Christ. But its most suggestive use is that katharos ( G2513) is used of that ceremonial cleanness which entitles a man to approach his gods. "Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. See Maji Obss. But this could not be. First, we must guard it, especially from those who would pressure us to follow the law. This is what is found under it. And who will venture to say that the indwelling Spirit of God fails to supply power to him who submits to the righteousness of God in Christ? So, joy is love's consciousness. He leaves it to spiritual wisdom to gather what was the evident impression of the truth. take heed that ye be not consumed one of another; that is, either beware lest each other's particular peace and comfort be destroyed, which is oftentimes done this way, though a person's state and condition God-ward may be safe; or lest their church state should be destroyed and come to nothing, since love is the cement of it, which being loosened, threatens a dissolution; for as no civil community, either public or private, divided against itself, can stand long, so no religious one; and for want of love the Lord threatens to remove, and sometimes does remove, the candlestick out of its place. He had derived the gospel that he preached from the Lord, and not from any of his fellow-servants who had been engaged in the work before him. Generally speaking the word is not used of patience in regard to things or events but in regard to people. Hence the effect of the law in all its ramifications on man is the same. First, we must guard it, especially from those who would pressure us to follow the law. Paul had written in the earlier part, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me" ( Galatians 2:20 ). God promises the final power and glory of Israel in the earth, putting down their foes, and so forth. WebGalatians 5:115 focuses on what those in Christ should do with our freedom in Christ. But he was not thus disobedient to the heavenly vision. You couldn't believe the things the Jehovah Witnesses believe, unless you read their screwy attitudes and ideas in their books. He who is upsetting you--whoever he is--will bear his own judgment. 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. It will appear that we are the disciples of Christ indeed when we have love one to another (John 13:35); and, where this temper is kept up, if it do not wholly extinguish those unhappy discords that are among Christians, yet at least it will so far accommodate them that the fatal consequences of them will be prevented. And so, such things leaves an unending list of things of the flesh. There was no insult to him, nor injury done, in saying that he did not acknowledge the law for a Christian. Beware of destroying one another. If I preach circumcision, then why would they keep persecuting me? The writer of First Maccabees ( 1Ma_8:4 ) says that it was by makrothumia ( G3115) that the Romans became masters of the world, and by that he means the Roman persistence which would never make peace with an enemy even in defeat, a kind of conquering patience. "Yet undergirding all of Pauls admonitions regarding love and service is the reality of life lived by the Spirit, with references to the Spirit being more frequent in Galatians 5:13 to Galatians 6:10 than references to either love or service." And so, the people of Galatia understood exactly what Paul was talking about. Jealousy; this word (zelos, G2205, from which our word zeal comes) was originally a good word. What throws most light on its meaning is that the adjective praus ( G4239) is used of an animal that has been tamed and brought under control; and so the word speaks of that self-control which Christ alone can give. There is no law which condemns thing; like that. And Peter said, "I suggest that we not place a yoke of bondage on them which neither we, nor our fathers were able to bear" ( Acts 15:10 ). So there's only one real fruit of the Spirit, that is love. [Note: Barclay, p. (I mean by this, of course, exclusive of sin and falsehood.) Further, it is laid down, if there had been a law capable of giving life, righteousness would be by the law. ", But, he adds, faith is come (that is, the testimony to be believed by man now, or the gospel). First, we must guard it, especially from those who would pressure us to follow the law. What is the difference? This passage, however, indicates they are having disputes. You never come to believe in what the Mormons believe through reading the Bible. There can be no compromise; but to be exclusive in any sense save as the expression of the truth in Christ would be in its own way an utter and heartless falsehood. He was not converted first, and then gradually led into that highest degree, but called at once to be an apostle as well as saint in a way that belonged to no one but himself. Nevertheless, there never was one that had a deeper sense of the importance of walking, if need were, alone with God. Leave room for God, and for God alone. The apostle does not say, if grievous wolves should enter in among you and not spare the flock; but suggests if they themselves should act the part of wolves to one another; having reference to their controversies about the law and circumcision, and the necessity thereof to justification and salvation; which were managed with great heat and bitterness, occasioned great contentions, and threatened them with divisions, parties, and factions; and were attended with envy and malice, with reproachful words, biting sarcasms, scandalous invectives, and injurious actions, which must be of bad consequence: hence he adds. Though we ought to stand fast in our Christian liberty, yet we should not insist upon it to the breach of Christian charity; we should not use it as an occasion of strife and contention with our fellow Christians, who may be differently minded from us, but should always maintain such a temper towards each other as may dispose us by love to serve one another. What a gross inconsistency! "They gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision." Paul was confident the Galatians would resist the one leading them in the wrong direction. The apostle's discerning eye at once judged by Christ and by that gospel which he had learned from Him. "What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?" Liberty comes first, mark; power and love afterwards. WebThe surrendered believer who is walking in spirit and truth, is yielded to the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit Who works through our new life in Christ, and over time we discover an inner discipline at work. Along with himself he takes care expressly to couple others: "and all the brethren which are with me." The sense is, if you contend with each other; and the reference is, apparently, to the strifes which would arise between the two parties in the churches - the Jewish and the Gentile converts. Accordingly the duty here recommended to us is that we set ourselves to act under the guidance and influence of the blessed Spirit, and agreeably to the motions and tendency of the new nature in us; and, if this be our care in the ordinary course and tenour of our lives, we may depend upon it that, though we may not be freed from the stirrings and oppositions of our corrupt nature, we shall be kept from fulfilling it in the lusts thereof; so that though it remain in us, yet it shall not obtain a dominion over us. For he comes to another and most cogent argument. Man had his duty to God, and be ought to have. And it is in the realm of the spirit where man meets God. The new creation is a present blessing that the soul already enjoys. The apostle now demonstrates, from the result, how destructive such proceedings in the church must ultimately prove to be. And they say, "Oh, well, I was just waiting upon the Lord and reading the Scriptures, and the Lord showed this to me." (ii) Remaz, its suggested meaning. But when I do fail, the Spirit is right there, and that's why I know I'm a child of God. As in the previous verses Paul set out the evil things characteristic of the flesh, so now he sets out the lovely things which are the fruit of the Spirit. They're just warmed over, put in a new coat, and declared by a fresh voice, or sometimes the voices aren't so fresh, but they're things, concepts that . (ii) There is the obligation to our fellow men. But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. It was not a question of man's wit. At first he prayed the Lord to take it from him; but no! Whom did their principle make them resemble? This is heavy. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, but that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. If any apostleship would have served for the Gentiles, it ought to have been Paul's then; for Paul was the apostle of the uncircumcision. At any rate, the Galatians, naturally fickle, were quick to take up prejudices. God reserves to Himself this great blessedness in the gospel; whereas under the law there was nothing of the kind.
